1.1.  UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS

 

In collaboration with the academic programs, the Office of Admissions aims to achieve the University’s enrollment goals by providing high-quality services that attract, admit, and enroll a diverse student body prepared to succeed academically, become active members of the campus community, and who will strive to realize the mission and goals of the American University of Armenia.

 

AUA is committed to providing high-quality undergraduate education to well-qualified applicants on a non-discriminatory basis, regardless of ability to pay. However, space in the entering class for each major is limited; thus, students are admitted on a competitive basis. The admissions process aims to select students who have the skills and ability to succeed at AUA and to assure that AUA is well-suited to their educational and career goals. For this reason, some applicants may be called for an interview as part of the admissions process. Having a specific grade point average or entrance exam score result is neither a guarantee of admission nor a definite indicator that an applicant will be rejected.

 

AUA practices holistic admissions. Each application is initially screened for technical eligibility. To be eligible for admission to AUA, applicants must provide proof of high school graduation or the equivalent by no later than the summer prior to the start of their undergraduate studies and submit a complete application with all required supplements. The AUA Bachelor’s Admissions Committee then conducts a thorough review of each eligible application. Part of this process may include an interview. As admissions to AUA is competitive, the AUA Bachelor’s Admissions Committee considers both academic and personal information including educational background, official entrance exam scores, extracurricular and volunteer experience, a personal statement, and the interview, if applicable. Decisions made by the AUA Bachelor’s Admissions Committee are final and cannot be appealed.

 

The American University of Armenia is open to all academically qualified applicants and does not discriminate on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy, disability, age, medical condition, marital status, citizenship, or military service status in administering its policies and programs.

 

1.2.  UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

 

To be considered for admission to AUA's undergraduate programs, an applicant must meet the following admissions requirements: 

• Be a student in his/her final year of studies at a high-school or equivalent, or have already earned a high school or equivalency degree (e.g., GED) by the time of application submission
• Complete high school, or equivalent, by no later than the summer prior to the start of their undergraduate studies and submit proof of graduation
• Submit a complete AUA Application for Admission to Undergraduate Study and all required supplements as outlined in the application instructions
• Satisfy the English Language Proficiency Requirement
• Satisfy the Math Proficiency Requirement
• Pay the non-refundable application fee 

1.3.  ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS – ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

 

The language of instruction at AUA is English. As such, all applicants must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the language to successfully participate in courses at AUA.

 

Applicants whose primary language is not English are required to demonstrate English language proficiency for admission consideration. Some applicants may be eligible to receive a waiver of the English Language Proficiency requirement if they meet the criteria below. Others must submit official exam results confirming English Language Proficiency either from the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

 

TOEFL iBT/IELTS Target Score Requirements for Admission Consideration

• TOEFL iBT – 79 or higher
• IELTS – 6.5 or higher

 

For AUA application purposes, the TOEFL iBT/IELTS scores are only valid for two years. Applicants must ensure that test scores are sent electronically to AUA by selecting institution code 4151 (TOEFL iBT) and to AUA directly by the British Council (IELTS).

 

Students with less than the required English language proficiency may be considered for conditional admission (see Section 5 below).

 

Applications are not considered complete until the Office of Admissions is in receipt of English language proficiency official score reports. Native or near-native English speakers are eligible to receive a waiver for the English Language Proficiency exam should they meet the eligibility requirements as outlined in the English Language Proficiency Test Waiver Policy.

 

Male Citizens of Armenia who request military deferment in their application must submit proof of English Proficiency either through the TOEFL iBT or IELTS exams in order to be considered for military deferment.

 

1.4.  ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICENCY TEST WAIVER POLICY

 

Applicants may receive a waiver to the English Language Proficiency requirement if they completed at least two years of full-time study at a recognized high school, college, or university where the primary language of instruction is English.  All requests for waivers are handled on a case-by-case basis and may require further information or interviews. To avoid delays in admission decisions, applicants are advised to submit their waiver request at least 8 weeks prior to submitting their application. Applicants should not assume they will automatically be granted a waiver. When there is doubt about English proficiency, applicants may be asked to take the TOEFL iBT or IELTS exams. Applicants not receiving a waiver should arrange to take the TOEFL iBT or IELTS and assure that official test results are reported in a timely manner to AUA.

 

As indicated above, male Citizens of Armenia requesting military deferment in their application will not be considered for military deferment with an approved waiver. They must also submit proof of English Proficiency through either the TOEFL iBT or IELTS exams in order to be eligible for the military deferment competition.

 

1.5.  MATH PROFICIENCY

 

Applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in mathematics at the time of application. Applicants planning to major in Computational Sciences or Business are expected to demonstrate superior math knowledge Available exams include the AUA Math Test, the SAT, or the ACT. Applicants who choose to take the SAT or ACT must send test scores electronically to AUA by indicating AUA’s institution code:

• SAT – 7257
• ACT – 6982

Applications are not considered complete until the Office of Admissions is in receipt of math proficiency official score reports.

 

2.1.  UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATION

 

All applicants to AUA undergraduate programs are required to submit the following documentation by the published deadline dates to be considered for admission:

• A complete Application for Admission to Undergraduate Study including all required supplements as outlined in the application instructions
• Proof of English Language Proficiency (refer to policy UGADM 1.4)
  • Applicants must receive approval of their waiver from AUA or alternatively take either the TOEFL iBT or IELTS by the published deadline date.
• Proof of Math Proficiency (refer to policy UGADM 1.5)
  • Applicants are required to take either the AUA Math Test or the SAT by the published deadline date.
• A copy of the photo and registration pages of applicant’s passport
• Two recent passport-sized photos
• Official transcript(s) and proof of high school graduation or equivalent
• Non-refundable application fee
• While not mandatory, applicants are encouraged to submit proof of any and all extracurricular and volunteer activities as indicated in their Application for Admission to Undergraduate Study.
• Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their applications electronically at http://im.aua.am. 

 

2.2.  UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATION DEADLINES

 

Because admission to AUA is competitive, applicants are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible and well before the published deadline dates. Priority is given to complete applications received by the early admissions and regular admissions deadline dates. Applicants who submit complete applications earlier will typically be notified of their status earlier. Male applicants, with Armenian citizenship, who request military deferment in their Application for Admission to Undergraduate Study must submit a complete application by the regular admissions deadline date. Not all applicants requesting military deferment will receive it.

 

• Early Admissions – January 15
• Regular Admissions – March 15

 

Pending space availability, applicants may submit applications by the rolling admissions deadline date. Applicants submitting complete applications by or on the rolling admissions deadline date are considered on a space-available basis. Applicants admitted from the rolling admissions deadline risk limiting their selection of courses during registration. For these reasons, applicants are encouraged to apply by early and regular published deadlines whenever possible.

 

• Rolling Admissions – June 1

 

If an application deadline date falls on a non-working day, applicants may submit their application packages on the following working day.

 

2.3.  UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATION FEES

 

Applicants and reapplicants submitting Applications for Admission to Undergraduate Study must pay the application fee. The application fee is non-refundable and subject to change without prior notice. For an up-to-date list of fees, please refer to http://admissions.aua.am/application-requirements/. 

 

3.  UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATION STATUS AND ADMISSIONS DECISION

 

In order for the Bachelor’s Admissions Committee to make a decision on an application, the Office of Admissions must receive complete applications with all required supplements. Applicants who submit complete application packages by AUA admission deadline dates will receive notification of their admission status by email, up to twelve weeks after each admission deadline date. Applicants who submit any new information after the published deadline date they want considered by the Admissions Committee, including test retakes, will be moved to the next deadline date. Any new information submitted after the published rolling admissions deadline date will not be considered.

 

Decisions made by the Bachelor’s Admissions Committee are final and cannot be updated or appealed.

 

4.  UNDERGRADUATE REAPPLICATION PROCESS

 

Applicants whose applications were previously denied, technically ineligible, or incomplete must submit new applications for admission. Accepted applicants who did not enroll at AUA or did not defer their offer of admission must also reapply. Reapplications will be reviewed by the Bachelor’s Admissions Committee, and must be submitted by the published admission deadline dates.

 

• If reapplicants apply for admission within the same academic year, they need not resubmit transcript(s), diploma(s), certificate(s), and other attachments already submitted with their initial Application for Admission to Undergraduate Study. Reapplicants should, however, submit any documents that provide new information or evidence that supports their ability to succeed in studies at AUA.

 

5.  CONDITIONAL ADMISSION

 

Undergraduate applicants who do not meet the target requirements for admission, but otherwise demonstrate the potential to successfully pursue a degree at AUA, may be considered for conditional admission. Students admitted conditionally will be required to meet any and all conditions as stipulated in their Admission Status Letter. Failure to meet stipulated conditions will result in the University rescinding the offer of conditional admission.

 

6.  UNDERGRADUATE VERIFICATION OF CREDENTIALS

 

AUA’s Office of Admissions reserves the right to verify the information listed in the application form and any additional documents submitted during the admissions process. During this process, the university may confirm the authenticity of all materials. Students who accept their admissions offer will be required to submit their final official diploma(s) and transcript(s), along with a copy after high school graduation to complete their admissions process. Original diplomas and transcripts will be returned. Admitted students who do not submit their final official diploma(s) and/or transcript(s) on time, or whose official transcript(s) do not match those submitted, may have their offer of admission rescinded or not be permitted to register at AUA.

 

7.  UNDERGRADUATE POLICY ON RESPONDING TO OFFERS

 

Along with the offer of admission, applicants receive a link to the Intent to Enroll form. Admitted students must complete this form by the indicated deadline date mentioned on the Intent to Enroll form to confirm their seat in the particular class to which they have been admitted. When accepting the offer of admission, applicants must also submit a non-refundable tuition deposit. Admitted students who fail to submit a complete Intent to Enroll form on time risk losing their seat.

 

8.  UNDERGRADUATE POLICY ON RETURN OF APPLICATION MATERIALS

 

Once submitted, the Application for Admission to Undergraduate Study and all supplemental documents become the property of the American University of Armenia and will not be returned to the applicant.

 

9.  UNDERGRADUATE POLICY ON GIFTS

 

The American University of Armenia’s Office of Admissions and its staff cannot accept gifts of any kind. Any staff found to accept a gift, regardless of its value, may be subject to dismissal.

 

10.  UNDERGRADUATE POLICY ON SUBMITTING APPLICANT SPECIFIC INQUIRIES

 

All questions relating to the status of an applicant must be submitted directly by the applicant to the Office of Admissions.
